Skyview Ranch: 2011 Hunter's Retreat |

8.5"x11" at 300 DPI on 90 lb. glossy. Flyer printed for Skyview Ranch's annual Hunter's Retreat event. Designed in Photoshop CS4.
Story Behind the Design: This was a fun project to put together, as the various elements in the piece above came together. Past hunter's retreats had relied on photos of big deer and guns to communicate the hunting experience. I wanted something with a bit more color and a lot more narrative. This piece includes 6 elements. There's a background blue gradient, a golden yellow gradient, the mountain photo (with a cutout filter applied), the buck on top of the mountain, a blended paper texture, and the advertising copy. This flyer was well received, and Skyview sold out on each of its two Hunter's Retreat events. |

Story Behind the Design: After completing the website warofthestaffs.com, the authors asked for a map to be designed that captured the world they wanted to create. Mr. Stephenson drew a quick sketch out on a piece of copy paper, and scanned it over to me. From there I traced the scan in Illustrator, and then added the details, paper texture, color and names in Photoshop. This map is available in high resolution on their website, and will eventually be made available in the next book of the War of the Staffs series. This map was a fun project (partially inspired by this Lord of the Rings map), and a special thanks goes out to the authors for giving me the opportunity to build this for them. |

Story Behind the Design: How do you take an abstract idea and make it visible? That's one of the toughest jobs a designer can face in my opinion. In this case, the idea was a combination of nostalgia, childhood and resting in knowing your dad would always be there for you. I struggled through this one, but finally landed on a design that combined all of these emotions into one piece, and still managed to fit the important verbiage on the poster without being distracting. This one was tough, but the toughest ones end up being the most enjoyable in the end because the result is beautiful!

Story Behind the Design: Film School is a quick, intense two-day event where a master of the film/video craft comes and trains ministry leaders in how to make great video  productions. I had learned that the individuals who are interested in this kind of event are film nerds. 2010's film school was marketed as much to film and video forums as it was churches and individuals. With that in mind, I wanted a design that would catch the film buffs' attention. And so this design was born. I wanted something that would have a similar look and feel to the J. J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg movie coming out in the summer of 2011, Super 8. |
